Hi Everybody,
As most of you know I have been working on offering some limited edition locos based on existing Hornby live steam models. It is not part of the plan to change anything from a technical standpoint, only to offer locos in the various liveries they appeared in. The first offer will be an A4 in experimental purple.
Four A4’s were painted in this livery from 1948 through to 1950 it was then decided that all pacifics would be painted in express blue.
The four locos were Kingfisher, Woodcock, Merlin and Walter K Whigham. This run will be limited to 35 locos in total; the number of A4’s built. Each will have a presentation box and limited edition certificate. I am buying the boxes ready made, Nick will be finishing them to his normal high standard.
Warren Haywood, a well known modeller who has undertaken many commissions over the last thirty years will carry out the re-livery. Should you wish to see his work please visit his website
www.modelrailwaypainting.co.uk
My original thought was to provide the whole loco, but the more thought one gives to it then the correct way is to change an owners existing loco, many of us have more than one example of each loco, also it gets over the issue of the quality of the loco itself, i.e. less risk to ourselves.
The way this would work is as follows:
As currently, I will fund the project with all proceeds going to the club, if this first run is successful, then I would ask the club to consider funding going forward, as you will see from the costings below, it does not require much cash, in fact we can ask for money up front. I have a stock of four bodies donated by John Humphries of Hornby, currently I have spent about £450 with Warren to carry out the livery change.
Final costings are as follows:
Painting, lining, numbering and naming £110
Box including finishing £50
Materials £5
Certificate £5
Postage £10
Contingency £15
Contribution to club £100
Selling price £295
Nick will now finish one of the boxes; he will then post pictures for you all to see.
Warren Haywood, can do a further six by the end of September, in addition to the four already completed, this will cover all the orders I have from you (committee members) and also an order from Dave Wood. It leaves two spare if Mike M, Jimmy or Norman would like one. Delivery lead-time for further orders will be eight weeks. No further orders until October 1st.
I therefore don’t plan to announce on the website until mid September, by which time we will have seen the box and also the certificate.
I have the following orders:
Chris – Kingfisher
George – Merlin
Nick – Woodcock
Eric – Merlin
Charles – Woodcock
Adrian – Walter K Whigham
Plus
Dave Wood – Merlin
There will be a £50 discount for committee members; this will still leave a £50 contribution for the club
Donor locos accepted are either DDE or GF, why? They need to be without valances and they need to have black wheels.
All I need is the loco and tender body.
A couple of points to note:
Warren does not paint the front of the loco, no point as it is black and remains black; we therefore need to bear in mind the following:
Only DDE has shed plate, A4 and kings x on the front, GF in wartime black has nothing.
Two of the locos were kings x at the time they were in this livery Walter K and Woodcock.
So it would be best that the donor bodies are GF other than if want Walter K or Woodcock, in which case DDE works well. GF works for both.
Merlin was a Haymarket loco at this time, as was Kingfisher. So Warren will put the appropriate plates on the front.
One further point, they all had corridor tenders at this time as well.
Those who have ordered please confirm you still wish to go ahead? Also, not too late to have a name change if you wish, also do Mike, Jimmy and Norman want one?

I am falling back in love with the A3.....
Very nice indeed!
Hi Some pictures to follow of the two A4's in Apple Green and A3 Trigo in Experimental Purple.
I'll bring all three to the Summer Meet.
Hi, Just fitting the body to the second A4 in Doncaster Green with the all black front, I'll post some pictures in the next day or so, will also bring to the summer meet.
You're quite right I have enjoyed it, also don't forget the work Nick put into this, particularly with those boxes.
I know he did. . . . Roll on the next one . . . . . and many thanks for all your efforts.
Maurice has now been fully reimbursed for this project.
Outstanding work Maurice and I think you enjoyed it too!

The interest in the experimental purple seems to have run it's course. 20 sold to date. I don't think we should formally end it as we can go to 35 and indeed there may be some sold in the future to new and existing members, so time to move on to the next one.
Eureka!! I have found a way to add the locos to the shop, showing as available but without the basket feature. It is therefore impossible to purchase one through the shop payment mechanism. Cash, Bank transfer or IBAN payments will best for these.
PayPal take around a tenner per loco, therefore, I have changed the shop narrative so a buyer will have to contact Maurice before committing to a purchase. Payment methods can then be discussed.
No it was an error, he has had a refund on one!
I'm delighted he's bought two but it's expensive on paypal, that really eats into the profit at this value. How much is it Nick at £295
I don’t!! He’s paid for two twenty minutes apart, so I’ve asked him to explain his intended choices.
Seems to have worked,,,,, Clive Janson has ordered 2!!!
Now Maurice has 'launched' the special and Nick has added them to the shop I have added an announcement and a link to the ools site home page.
Very nice Nick. I did get nice and close to Leicester City on the day.

There!!! That’ll calm thee!!!
OK accepted. I just wasn't party to any of those discussions.
Ok lads calm down, calm down!!! 😂
I never said that you did. Bodge was just the word I used to make my point about your concerns. For those who did see it the box is right, the material and padding are right but the first attempt at fitting it into the box was not perfect. None of us have seen the finished product yet but with the discussed higher quality finish, more work on the interior and applying the badge plus limited edition certificate I have every confidence it will be worth the money.
I never used the word bodge and would.t expect us to bodge anything.
It's just that I have never seen any prototype and was aware of some misgivings. I just wanted to be assured (by seeing the finished thing) that £55 would be well spent.
Although to me it was a perfectly reasonable request for my personal loco and was never suggested as an option for club members I now feel that this discussion is becoming uncomfortable and not what I intended.
I must also point out to Adrian that we don't do 'bodge'. the finished box product will be 1st class, as always.
As I do not feel that strongly about it (it was only an idea) in the interests of club harmony I withdraw the request and will happily take delivery of my boxed limited edition loco.
For club members I think we should stick with the original concept. It's meant to be a special edition package, any reduction in the scope of supply cheapens it completely.
Excellent!
Hi, just to let you all know only received four bodies to date, from Eric, Chris, Nick and George. They will go tomorrow. Adrian and Charles please send you loco bodies asap! As Eric's loco arrived first his certificate will be no1, Chris and Nick's arrived on the same day, I opened Nick's first so no2, Chris no3 and George no4.
Maurice
Please bare in mind we are trying to produce something special for the club and it’s members, in a very limited capacity!
Weather you choose to use the box is a personal matter but with a £50 discount already to committee members on the deal. To try to save another £50 is taking in my opinion, away from the overall product!!
You will essentially be paying £200 for a respray!!
Might as well grab some Humbrol paint and shoot some on yourself and save a bomb!!
But then that would defeat the whole object of this exercise would it not!
Never noticed and nobody talked about it in my earshot.
I think the box should be used anyway as a seriously limited paint job needs keeping well protected, not roughing it in a plastic container with the rest of the common gentry!
It was there all weekend on the stand for all to see bud! Actually I thought we had shown it to your good self! Obviously not.
Thanks guys. So you picked my one hour away from the stand late on the last day to bring out and show one of the most important initiatives we have ventured into. Should we not have had it on show all weekend?
If I'm being asked to pay £55 for something I won't actually use I do want to see it first.
Maybe I can make any spare boxes up into Dynamometer Car boxes as these are also a limited run item. :-8
We had it at Quorn Adrian but you were riding about on trains instead of examining the goods!!! Ha ha!
I’m no upholsterer but the inside lining is rather time consuming and tricky to do, we may yet have to employ an outside source to do this for us.
Actually, I'm still waiting to see a finished box. The last I heard the insides were getting a makeover? Yes? Is there a production version of the box yet?
I do agree with Nick about the concept. Long term (I hope!) when swmbo gets to deal with my last will and testament then value will matter but for the moment I agree with Chris. I just want to run it.
Ha ha!!! .....But of course Mr Bond!
Maybe we should ‘brand‘ the boxes with the cert number and the owners name for posterity. That should add value!!!!!!
I use a limited edition RC transmitter that has its own dog tags with the LE number and my name!!! Very personal and rather nice!!
When I asked the question it was purely for my own benefit as in my case the box will never be used and just be put in the loft.
I definitely don't think we should offer it as an option to all so I suggest that we limit this option to any committee members who might feel the same way. I agree with Nick about the future value and if the plan is to buy with an eye on resale value then they will buy with a box anyway. .
And as far as less work goes . . . should I ever change my mind there would be the possibility of a bit of extra cash for the club by selling me a box then . . at a premium price of course . . . . :)
Hmmmmm,,,,I feel It does rather detract from the original concept of a super special Limeted Edition loco. The saving is only 20% of the proposed deal but would affect the value by possibly 50-60% a la Matchbox models. (One day it may end up on the market and a full package will appeal more than a split one)
.....also so if we supply just a repainted body and a certificate,,then these could just end up on eBay as profit makers and never see a loco in a boxed rebuilt manner as originally intended.
Less work for me though!!! ::-)
Hi Everybody,
Chris has asked the following question,:
Can I have my limited edition without the box and save some money?
The answer is one can, the saving would be £50-£55. The downside is there could be an issue to value if one wanted to sell on without the box. Chris's view is as he doesn't plan to sell then he'd rather save the money.
I don't have a problem with it, the question is do we limit this to committee members or do we make the box an option for all?
Your feedback please?
Maurice
