- CoronavirusIn General Discussion2 March 2020The information I have from people in the know is that the critical period for this nasty virus will be between mid March and mid April. As such individuals will have to take their own precautions and potentially self isolate. I would support the suggestion. As a point of interest, living on an island, totally dependant of ferries, I have increased my dry foods/tins/staples reserve to a three week supply, while the supermarket shelves are still reasonably full. The antibacterial hand wash has all sold out already. It may be prudent for everyone to look at their individual circumstances and make some plans accordingly. This isn't a panic reaction, but a sensible precaution, taken ahead of any official announcements, which will not come until late for fear of creating panic. I speak as a trained emergency/disaster planner!02

- John Humphrys RIPIn General Discussion19 October 2022You will be pleased to know that I have now received a response from Andy Walker Hi Chris Thanks for your kind words and for the information. I did know that John had tentatively set up a link with you guys but didn’t get the details so this will help greatly. We are having a good sift through the mountain of John’s stuff and as we come across anything Live Steam we will be keeping them together . once we have a sizeable haul we will arrange to send what we have. I’m sure most will end up just being worthless to you but figured that you will know more than we will so apologies in advance for any “junk” you get! Thank you Kind Regards Andy Walker Head of Quality Just to make it clear to Andy that we will be grateful for anything they send I have sent the following reply Thanks for the reply and we will make the most of anything you send us. As they say one man’s junk is another man’s treasure and in the case of OO live steam this is very true. This last year the club have serviced or repaired over 40 locos and just like preserved railways we have reached the point where sometimes to fix a loco it is necessary to cannibalise a duff loco for parts that are no longer available. We would very much appreciate anything you can send to us, perceived as junk or not as I am sure it will be useful us. Fingers crossed that Hornby's junk turns out to be useful.02
- John Humphrys RIPIn General Discussion13 October 2022With Andy Walker, Hornby's Head of Quality saying this on the public site.... "In the last few years, our ability to continue to service these locos was getting to be zero but somehow John eked out our almost negligible remaining spares and with his knowledge and expertise was able to help many people within the Live Steam community. I'm terribly sorry to have to say that, sadly now, we have to officially "call time" on our ability to help with Live Steam." We really ought to appeal to Hornby to scavenge as many parts and miscellaneous left over bits thet they can find and let us have them. Can we contact him officially and ask to visit to collect as much as we are able to. It does risk seeming like circling vultures but as Andy realises, we are the only realistic resource to support the brand in future. In the ebsence of a Chairman I think you need to pick this up Chris and maybe Nick should visit Hornby if he is happy/able to.02

- It's time to review loco selling pricesIn General Discussion21 November 2023I do understand the term 'loss leader' and this is not what it is as we make some money from both loco sales and follow up shop sales so we already have it both ways. The use of the word "profit" when the club is a not-for-profit organisation is also misleading. These excessively priced ebay sales are just muddying the water - we are not (and must not be seen as) a commercial enterprise. Val0
- The elephant in the roomIn General Discussion7 June 2023"Is This Really necessary"? It seems we are in danger of introducing a somewhat unnecessary dollop of negativity into the OOLive Steam Brand. When we started the OOLSC, our various Events were often frequented by a large cohort of vociferous and opinionated visitors who were openly hostile to the Hornby Live Steam Brand. We are all aware that it was suffering the brunt from a totally unjustified label of unreliability which followed on from the initial, somewhat disastrous introduction of OOLive Steam into the market place. After 20 years, the OOLSC has largely negated that particular and highly destructive stigma attached to the brand whilst also putting it back on track toward becoming an important and sought after feature at Model Railway Events; and a "must have" element within the collections of a significant number of enthusiasts. I would ask. Is it really necessary to introduce any elements of negativity into the existing and wider collectors market that might imply that there is a potential problem real or imagined, with respect to Hornby Live Steam There is nothing particularly unusual in a collector of any form of 12volt, OO gauge (or any other gauge Locos) discovering that their variously acquired trains should be treated with due care upon running an particular ,often high value item. At most we need to simply indicate were appropriate a significantly light touch approach which is merely an acknowledgement to common sense. Charles.01
- It's time to review loco selling pricesIn General Discussion22 November 2023We've just bought a loco, spent hours servicing it only to discover its scrap. We nearly lost one in the post recently. These 'costs' have to be built in to our sales price plus some profit to subsidise and I would like to think expand the Roadshow. Making a profit on a loco sale does to turn us into a profit seeking enterprise. It just supports costs elsewhere. I think average ebay price plus say £100 for the service and guarantee is fair and our customers would see that.0
